Painful Knee replacments

Why is it tight? It swells still! It pops and catches!

What I do

While many patients have no pain after knee replacement Some struggle with stiffness and continued pain. Sometimes their doctors tell them there is nothing else that can be done… We may be able to help.

Identify the Problem

Arthrofibrosis

Everyone makes scar tissue with open surgeries. Sometimes it is just too much. We must first evaluate the knee to ensure there is no malalignment, loosening or infection. If it is just stiff due to scar tissue (or the medical term is arthrofibrosis) we may be able to help. In the picture to the left abundant scar is seen right next to the patellar button.

Arthroscopy

Excision of Scar tissue – Day Surgery

Scar tissue can be removed by arthroscopy. This involves making small poke holes in a same day surgery under an anesthetic. Studies show that many patients recover 10-15° more motion but more importantly feel like their knee moves more naturally and hurts less. It may also swell less afterwards.Like all surgeries there are risks including infection. You will need to be medically cleared for surgery.

Rehabilitation

Getting you back to what you love

Physical therapy after surgery is key. We ask patients to schedule their therapy to begin the same day as the surgery. You may be in therapy for 6-8 weeks. Therapy exercises will continue even beyond this at home. We know a knee replacement is not a normal knee but the goal is to get you back to doing normal exercise.
